Fear

Zoe Gainer '22, Literary guest writer

Mr. Police Officer sir,

What are you afraid of?

For you are the one with the weapons and the privilege,

So let me ask again,

What are you afraid of?

No answer huh.

It must be hard to respond with an answer you’re ashamed of.

It must be hard to respond knowing your own prejudice and bias,

Is what made you draw your gun.

Let me ask another question,

Why do you always draw your gun?

The most lethal weapon of them all?

Why not the:

Taser.

Mace.

Baton.

Why do you always seek to kill?

What do you accomplish from killing?

At least you get to hide behind a uniform,

for there is no removing the skin I’m in.

Officer, I have one more question.

What is it like,

Being able to take it off?

To remove the threat after a long hard day of work,

A threat that you filled out an application for.

See,

I can’t remove my threat.

My threat is my skin.

I am black, black, and black,

Through and through.

Officer,

If the threat is me,

What am I supposed to do?
