Simple Ways to Get Through Valentine’s Day

February 2014

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful holiday to celebrate the love of a couple, unless you are single; then it is merely a day to remind you of your perpetual loneliness. But there is hope for the bitter, Valentine’s Day is merely a holiday created by the corporate card companies trying to squeeze every last cent out of hard working Americans. There are ways to get around wanting to gag from seeing all the lovey-dovey cards, chocolate, and commercials that typically fill the stores and television. Here are some simple ways to get around your blue Valentine’s Day.

Netflix a Disney movie! Whether you’re a boy or a girl, a classic Disney movie can uplift anyone’s spirits. They always have a happy ending and a good family oriented message that can get through to even the most cynical among us. Mulan, Hercules, Treasure Planet, Lilo and Stich, Pocahontas, and many more childhood classics are at the touch of a button. Valentine’s Day can be a day to celebrate love in a general sense and not through monetary ways.

Another way of getting through the holiday is celebrating it with your friends! Friends are always there for you when you need them, and chances are one of your other friends does not have a special someone to celebrate with either. Go out and celebrate another year of being awesome with someone who cares about you. Romantic love is overrated anyways. Best friends never leave you, and they usually enjoy eating and pajamas as much as you do.

Enjoy it with your family! Have a nice dinner, watch a movie, play a board game, play charades, but enjoy the day with the people you love. Even spend this Valentine’s Day listening to some love songs, whether you’re pulling out your hair in frustration with the trivial holiday or celebrating love, spend it listening to songs filled with enchanting lyrics and charming singers and your day can only improve. One could always spend the day alone, pretending that it’s just any other day. Maybe you could treat yourself to some chocolate and quiet time. When it comes down to it, the important thing to understand is that Valentine’s Day was certainty not created to ruin your day; the card companies wouldn’t get money that way. But in all honesty, Valentine’s Day is not the enemy, nor is Hallmark after all; it is just a holiday. In the end, Valentine’s Day is only as bad or as good as you make it, and it has the potential to be great.
