As we all know, spring break is a time for relax- ation and bonding with either family or friends, although at times it can get dangerous. In the Wilmington Friends community, teachers and students see spring break as the nice middle ground between winter and the long stretch before the end of school. Most students think spring break should be longer, as there are sometimes important holidays like Easter, Ramadan, and Passover. Tyler Maheshwari ‘24 explained his spring break experience and how he traveled to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Tyler was asked if he traveled anywhere, and how he learned about their culture. Tyler states, “I went to Punta Cana for spring break. I’m %uent in Spanish, I was in an all inclusive resort but not given the authentic Dominican experience. At the resort there were Dominican shows performed. My experiences with bartenders/workers talking in Spanish represents the cultural elements I was immersed in. I’d say I learned Spanish when I talked with the workers. I have been to the Dominican Republic before.” His vacation with a bunch of family and friends, including lots from the WFS community, had a positive impact on the people around them and overall was a relaxing break. While this trip looked perfect on the outside there are other spring break destinations where it’s not picture perfect like Miami, Florida. In recent years, Mi- ami has been an extremely popular spring break destina- tion, as the city is lively. However, in a new video, Miami has been struggling with safety precautions. Citizens in Miami have o&cially “broken up” with vacationers. In the video, posted on Youtube, people say “We are over. Good luck with curfews, security checks for beach access, DUI detail, License Plate Readers, increased park- ing rates, and arrests for drug possession and violence.” Most adults want to go out on the town and try new restaurants, see new sights, hit up the beach, go to the spa, etc. Although teenagers and college students have a di”erent agenda. !ese young individuals tend to get drunk and ignore laws and regulations. Chas Egoville ‘24 is heading to Miami this coming fall for college. Chas was asked how he feels about Miami’s public statement and also how it may a”ect him in his upcoming years. Chas elaborates, “!is video makes me feel sad, that people ruined a good spring break destination as the rules weren’t enforced enough and people are failing at being mindful and responsible around local residents and communities. I feel that these new rules are going to deter the wrong crowd from coming to Miami, and allow for a more civilized way of life.” !e message sent out by Miami is meant to en- courage safety among vacationers and citizens. !is will hopefully have a positive outcome by helping the general public realize they may be disrupting other people’s lives or homes.
