According to the New York Times, a research group from Stanford University has found that simple cell phones can be used to distinguish different types of mosquitoes by their hums. This technology has many practical uses, particularly in areas where mosquito-born diseases, like West Nile virus and Zika, are most prevalent. The students at Stanford believe the technology should be explored for its potential use.
