The winter track team – one of many winter teams at Friends – smiles for their team picture.

We are well underway into the 2015-16 winter sports season here at WFS. Everyone is very excited to get away from the weather and practice in our indoor facilities (Except for winter track, of course).  The 7 sports are excited to get down to business this season.

Coming off an amazing last season, the wrestling team is starting off hot once again. Although they lost four graduating seniors this year, the team has done well to cover all the spots they can. The team welcomed 6 new wrestlers to the team this year. The team is starting off the season 2-1 in dual-meets, which is very impressive, but what is more impressive is the chemistry the team has. Josh Pincus ‘16, a Senior Captain this year and a four-year varsity wrestler, is very happy with what he is seeing so far when he said, “The wrestling team is a group of brothers.”

Girls’ basketball has a few new additions to the team this year. New assistant coach, Rachel Grimes, has brought a new attitude to the team with her TITUS training style.  The conditioning has been tough, but it will be worth it in the long run. The beginning of the year hasn’t quite been what the team has been expecting, according to Junior Jayna Jones ‘17, “We had a rocky start to the season, but recently we’ve been changing the way we practice, and our last win against St. Andrew’s was us a step in the right direction. The team gets along really well, and our managers are definitely the best in the state!” The team will continue to pile up the W’s as the season rolls on.

Boys’ basketball has had many close games since the season has started, and all of them have been hard fought. The basketball team got new uniforms this season, and they look great on the players (Thanks, Kittle). The team will be looking to improve their record after a few tough losses.

Boys’ and girls’ swimming have been doing very well. The number of boy swimmers is significantly smaller than the number of girl swimmers, but the men are finishing well alongside higher ranked teams. The swimmers are young, but certainly not inexperienced. Freshman Joey Mullen ‘19 talks about his experience with being on the team, “As a freshman, the team was great with bringing me into the group. Also Robin is really great about academics first and understands how important it is to balance sports and school”. The girls, on the other hand, are thriving under the wings of 11 upperclassman. The team welcomed three outstanding 8th graders this year, and their abilities have been turning heads everywhere!

Long time coach, Paul Nemeth, is excited to be back for another season of winter track here at Friends! Juggling three coaching jobs here, it’s surprising how well he manages to do it all. The team has had 3 meets so far, and they have all been successful. Senior Summer Tyler ‘16 is especially excited for what’s up ahead. When asked how the season is going so far, she replied with, “Great! We have had a good season so far. We have 3 meets left before states. We got new people on the team and we have jumpers, sprinters, distance runners, and throwers”. The team continues to look forward to what’s up ahead.

And last but not least, winter fitness has been exercising everyday to be getting stronger under the guidance of Coach Wood. They like participating in different cardiovascular workouts, and have fun doing it. It is also a great way to keep in shape.

The season is still young, and there is still time to turn the season around. The most important parts of sports is the team, and it is important to keep each other’s heads up and form a family.
