2020: Into the World of Sports

While it once seemed unlikely, the NFL has begun play this season… With heavy precaution of course.  Immediately a few teams and players stood out. The Chiefs proved that they were the rightful number one, going 4- 0 to start the season. On the other side of the standings were  the Texans, who decided to end their tenure with Head Coach Bill O’Brian. The Texans, led by Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson were 0-4 at the time of O’Brian’s dismissal. The Eagles continue their struggles from last year, barely scraping out a win in the first five weeks. Fortunately, the Eagles were able to fight past the Super Bowl runner-up 49ers for their first win of the season. One player who has taken the league by storm is rookie Justin Herbert. Herbert a first-round-pick out of Oregon, took the reigns of the LA Chargers offense early on, proving himself as worthy of a first-round-pick. Just weeks into his young career, Herbert went head to head with one of the greatest to ever do it: Tom Brady. Herbert showed his youth at times, however he impressed, going 20-25 for 290 yards in the Chargers loss. Look for Herbert to shine as the season continues.

When it comes to the MLB, the playoffs are in full swing. Gerrit Cole and the Yankees seemed like the team to beat, however they were upended by the Tampa Bay Rays. Although the Padres have been out of the hunt for a while now, Fernando Tatis was the talk of the league this year. Known for his big swing, Tatis seems to be the young face of the league moving forward. In what was clearly a closely watched series the hated Astros met the same fate as the Yankees, losing to the Rays. On the other side of the league, the Dodgers were favorites from the start. This seems like a strong take, as the Dodgers go into the World Series against the Rays hotter than ever before.

Following the MLB, the NBA season wrapped up less than two weeks ago, with the Los Angeles Lakers taking the Championship. As has happened each time he has won, Lebron James won MVP, averaging video game numbers throughout the series. James joked about the extra motivation he had, after losing the MVP race to Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Lakers beat the Miami Heat in six games, however at a deeper look, the series looked closer on paper than it really was. Throughout the series it was clear that Lebron and Anthony Davis were not going to let the Lakers lose no matter what.

While it was incredibly unfortunate how many sporting events were cancelled as a result of Covid-19, it is an unbelievable feeling that they are back on each and every night for us all to watch.
