People from all around the world recognize the Kardashian family name. The reality TV show “Keeping up with the Kardashians,” which first aired in 2007, brought the family to fame. The show features the rowdy family in their everyday lives. E!, the network that airs the show, has also created prosperous spin-offs such as, “Kim and Kourtney take New York” and “Kourtney and Khloe take Miami.” Few would consider their lives normal. The five daughters and one son grew up in a glamorous house where their mother Kris currently resides. Arguably the most well-known of the clan with a whopping 25 million Instagram followers — the most of anyone on the app — is the middle daughter, Kim Kardashian West. Her latest attempt to “break the internet” has everyone talking.

Many people question Kim’s rise to fame. Some argue that her father, Robert Kardashian, and his role in the OJ Simpson trial earned Kim her fame. Although, between modeling for Playboy, running numerous fashion lines, dating NFL player Reggie Bush, and marrying rapper, Kanye West, there is no question that Kim has made a name for herself. Looking through her Instagram, one might find an array of shocking and scandalous outfits; she has been known to flash cleavage and is especially known for her “larger than life” backside. Pictures of Kim showing skin are no shock to the public, but some of her latest photos released by Paper Magazine, a small magazine company that features art pieces, have caused the Internet to blow up in her attempt to “break the Internet.”

While at the shoot for the cover of Paper Magazine, Kim stated that she felt inspired working alongside photographer Jean-Paul Goude. According to Paper everyone left the set except for Kim and Goude. Together they recreated an infamous photo titled, “The Champagne Incident,” which he previously did with French model, Carolina Beaumont, in 1976. While there is no need to delve into details, note that the series of photos feature the model with very little clothing on. In the shot that Kim recreated, she balances a champagne glass on her body. When Kim agreed to release the photos, Paper put them on the cover with the caption, “Kim Kardashian: Break the Internet.”

Many people question what it means to “break the Internet.” While it cannot actually break, Paper Magazine’s goal was to have the photo posted, reposted, blogged about, and written about so many times that it would turn the Internet into a frenzy of, well, Kim Kardashian’s backside. TIME magazine stated, “that Kim Kardashian can “break the Internet” with a print magazine cover (as opposed to, say, an Instagram) is perhaps the biggest coup of all.”

Despite anyone’s opinions of Kim, no one can argue that she gets people talking. Exchange student Fredrikke Johansson ’16 said, “I’ve seen it come up on my Facebook a bunch of times.” Whether this was a calculated PR move, or Kim really was in the moment, only Kim can say. However, Paper has definitely benefited from her shoot, selling the magazine at 10 dollars a copy. While she did not “break the internet” literally, she has managed to keep people entertained and eager as to what she will do next.
